we should turn off the apple software update checks.

This should be possible with:

softwareupdate --schedule off

1) Is this something we already have turned off for our current rev3 10.6 machines in production?

2) Does this block us rolling these new rev4 10.6 machines into production?

Yes.

It will be causing a dialog box to appear and potentially disrupt tests that need focus (like the bluetooth prompt has in the past). That won't be happening very frequently because the check is once a week IIRC, but I'm not sure if it persists over a reboot. We should certainly fix this before the rev4 boxes take over from the rev3 ones.

jhford, is there a reference doc for the setup of the r4's ? Are there any other manual changes (which aren't in puppet) from the r3 leopard and snow leopard ref docs that need taking care of ?

The reference document is "wipe harddrive" + "install Mac OS 10.6" + "Update to 10.6.8 v1.1" + "install puppet 0.24.8" + "Set VNC password".

Beyond that, everything is in puppet.

disable OS X software updater

Here is the fix. I haven't tested this in staging yet, it'll be a quick test.
