I've received today an e-mail from my University, containing 1805 recipients.
Whenever I try to open it on Thunderbird, the application freezes, I've tried many times, even after rebooting the PC, both using my normal configuration and in safe mode, but after many minutes I always had to force close the application and restart it.

Valerio, Thomas, there are several duplicates of bug 460605 and friends. Could you consolidate them? thx

This bug happens when you click or double click on the message in the message list to open it, so it appears to be different -- although it may be related -- from Bug 619493 that happens simply receiving an e-mail with many addresses (with this bug Thunderbird work fine until you don't try to open the message), and from Bug 460605 that happens when you right click on an e-mail with too many addresses (with this bug you can right click and delete the offending e-mail).
It doesn't seem to be specifically related to other bugs in that list, like Bug 548413 which is about messages with very long lines (this bug happens also when there's a single e-mail address per line), or Bug 564051 which is about very large attachments.

Can you provide a stack trace as described at https://developer.mozilla.org/en/how_to_get_a_stacktrace_with_windbg (replace firefox by thunderbird) ?

they are essentially, IMO, the same issue

Essentially, same as Bug 619493, but, as I wrote bug 619493 comment #7(20,000 is too small, 60,000 needed to see severe slowness), I couldn't observe severe slowness with 1805 recipients by click of mail in Tb 7.0.1.
However, I could see slowness & CPU 100% by click of mail with 1805 recipients when I set View/Headers/All.
Do you set View/Headers/All in your daily use?
Depends on: 619493

I confirm it only happens when you have View/Headers/All enabled.

Same problem here. Yesterday I received a spam with +23.000 recipients in the field (To:). I didn't even need to click on the e-mail message to reproduce the problem. Probably Thunderbird was trying to index the headers of the message and gets unresponsive. I waited for several minutes but the application crashed. I'm using the lastest version 7.0.1. I'll generate a stacktrace when I have some free time. Thanks.

Ivan Bauer: if you don't need to click on the message, then it's Bug 619493 .

Changed the title to avoid further confusion, especially considering the current status of NEW Bug.

Ading "View/Headers/All" to bug summary per comment #6.

I get the error "Too Many Recipients", when trying to send an email to 70 destinations, it blocks me and I can't send any more, so I have to restart the machine to get it to work again. Any suggestion to solve this problem?... Thanks
