From Bugzilla Helper: User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Win98; en-US; 0.8) Gecko/20010215 BuildID: 2001021508 Checking for new mail shows transfer of new messages in the status bar but after the transfer is finished the Inbox-Folder (in the left 3-pane window) doesn't reflect the presence of new messages. Only when clicking it, it's font changes to bold and the number of unread messages is displayed. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: Created two POP-Accounts, with POP-Options set to "Leave Messages on server". Then right clicked any of those accounts and selected "Get Messages for account". Mail-Transfer occured for both Account, there were some Messages for both of them. Actual Results: None of my Inbox-Folders changed Font (to bold) nor reflected the number of unread (new) messages after the transfer. Only after clicking the Inbox-Folder, the status is updated. Expected Results: Change the Inbox-Folder-Entries immediately after arrival of new Mail, so the user can see in which folders new mail has arrived.

changing status to new. I see that the new users will have this problem and probably will not figure out to even click on the inbox to see their messages. When the focus remains on the account level the account central page is always displayed. This page is not really helping or giving any clue to the user that he or she has to click on the inbox to see the messages in the thread pane. I see that even with biff for pop account the biff indication is only on the account level, task bar and the sound so far which is not helping much in this case. But once the focus is on the inbox the biff indication will then be on the parent and child folders. If the account level is selected the inbox does not have the biff arrow hence gives the user no clue as to how he can view his message. I strongly feel inspite of user doing all his activities of logging in get messages when the account level is selected as soon as the above happens may be the account central page should go away and the focus should be on the inbox which will then display the messages in the thread pane. Or Include in the account central page to click on the inbox to be able to see the messages. Ccing all the related people on this bug.

Reporter, If you want to see the messages you can also click on Read Messages from the account central page or summary page. Read Messages will take you to inbox too. ================================================================================ cc-ing robin I spoke to bhuvan about this bug. I would like to request to change Read Messages to 'Read Messages in inbox' or to some thing more intuitive than just Read Messages. If you all agree then I will change the summary in this bug.
I talked with Bhuvan and we agreed that "Read Messages" doesn't really convey what happens, since when you click "Read Messages", we get new messages and open your Inbox (for both POP and IMAP). Perhaps we should change "Read Messages" to say "Get new messages and open my Inbox". However, I know we wanted to keep the Account Central text brief. Comments?
Do we really think people will be confused by "Read my Messages?"
I don't think we have to be so exact as "Get new messages and open my Inbox". I think "Read my messages" or "Read messages" is fine. I think this bug is about a different problem, "None of my Inbox-Folders changed Font (to bold) nor reflected the number of unread (new) messages after the transfer. Only after clicking the Inbox-Folder, the status is updated." As far as Sheela's comments, I think Bhuvan recently fixed this with the "Check for mail at startup" bug. The default mail account INBOX, POP or IMAP, is now selected at startup.
My roommate likes 'Check Messages' with the caveat that it jumps to the first folder with new mail (if you filter everything this folder could be something other than inbox). This is imo a more accurate and logical pairing
erm, I meant Check Mail. [assuming we're only checking mailboxes] but i'm flexible on that word.
I agree with "timeless" on this. This would be a good behaviour.
Behaviour changed with Build 2001022705. I stayed with the same setup and now the Indication of Inboxes having new messages is correct - as long as you dont have any mail-filter attached. Attached a mail filter to the first account - the first message retrieved matches the filter and gets transferred into another folder, which then correctly indicates the presence of a new message. Any other messages transferred in the same transaction, which not match the filter - get transferred to "Inbox", which then is not showing the presence of new messages. Messages transferred from the other account then do also not change the status indication of the associated Inbox.
This could be more detailed steps on how to reproduce the problem where people say that messages are getting downloaded by not displayed. see 52053. Esther or Sheela, do these steps help? cc'ing Navin.
Sorry for the confusion.:( According to jennifer's comments 2001-02-26 11:43 I see that once the default mail account INBOX, POP or IMAP, is getting selected and after successfully logging in there should no problem of not being able to see messages. Based on jennifer's comments 'Read Messages'wording in the account central page does not have to be changed. I would see it being more difficult to figure out when the selection is at account level and the account central page is displayed. According to the reporter's comments on 2001-03-01 03:53 this bug is same as bug 52053 or one of the pop box of not able to see messages inbox.
Reporter, If you did "Get Messages for account" selecting the account level from the context menu in the folder pane then, that will retrieve messages only for the selected account and will update the folder with the unread count. You will see the visual a green arrow also. It will not retrieve messages for the second account even though you have logged into the account. "Get Messages for all Account" is the only menu item or if selected from the toolbar drop down that will retrieve messages for all the accounts but only if you have logged into all the accounts. Did you expect that "Get Messages for account" should retrieve messages for all accounts and update folders and the unread count?
Reporter, If you don't respond this will be marked invalid. Please see my comments on 2001-03-02 17:41 and reply yes or no.
No, i definitely didn't expect this to happen. Checking Mail on the Account level should clearly only check/get mail for this account. Fact is that after getting mail the first account (and filtering it), a get for the second account does not change any mailbox-folder-statistics for the second account, even if messages were downloaded (to the inbox). Opening the inbox then shows the messages downloaded and updates the status of the inbox-folder.
Adding nsdogfood and nsbeta1 keyword, and jenm to cc: list.

Based on comments from the reporter on 2001-03-13 02:56 for my questions on 2001-03-02 17:41 it was not what I expected. I will try it one more time and see if I can reproduce this and soon will update the bug.

buildid: 2001-03-21-06 on win98 According to the when this bug got logged. Here are the following steps that I did and I am not able to create what was initially reported. Steps that I did: created a new profile with 2 pop accounts After creating the first account by default inbox gets selected and the password dlg appears I cancelled the password dlg Went to accounts/settings and did -Check leave messages on the server. I created the second pop account while I was in accounts/settings I close accounts/settings dlg While in 3 pane, I did get message on 1st account from the get message button. Password dlg came up, logged in and saved password Retrieved all messages in that account Did get message on 2nd account from the get message button Password dlg came up, logged in and saved password Retrieved all messages in that account ----- I then went to another machine and sent a mail to these two accounts Then I selected the account level and right click to "Get messages for account" on first account Result: Green arrow appeared at the account level and the inbox and updated the inbox unread count in the folder pane (1) Then I selected the account level and right click to "get messages for account" on second account Result: Green arrow appeared at the account level and the inbox and updated the unread count in the folder pane (1) As per your comments 2001-03-13 02:56 having a filter created for 1st account and I sent a message to both the accounts again. This time the message matched the filter so that the message got filtered to another folder other than inbox for the first account and did a "get message for account" one my filtered folder did get an unread update in folder pane and a green arrow at the account level. Then I did another "get message for account" for the second account and the folder pane did get updated with the unread count, green arrow appeared. Reporter, if this not what you did and if you are seeing a different problem please log a new bug. This works on the above build I mentioned. Now that you mentioned of having filters involved there is an existing bug when filters are involved. See bug 68737. Based on his comments 2001-03-13 02:56 that filter being involved which is bug 68737 an existing bug. I am going to mark this as worksforme after this long story.
