Per bug 688011, search terms are persisted for a user- unless they view the start page, when the search terms are cleared.

1) add data to search field> search
2) click 'Desktop' or any start page link

expected: search terms are persisted in the search box
actual: search terms are cleared

Crystal, can you comment on this? I thought it would be weird/confusing to have the home page show your last search terms. If I saw that I would think the content below was somehow related to them, and it isn't.

It looks like the cookie is set for 1 hour right now.

1 hour sounds pretty good to me actually. 

Crystal, I'd say not persisting on the home page makes sense. Just intuitively I would expect my search string to persist on the start page.

Competitive analysis says not to persist on home page. It's a different interface, so lets keep it as Ricky implemented.
