Details
User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 6.1; rv:7.0.1) Gecko/20110929 Thunderbird/7.0.1
Build ID: 20110929044556
Steps to reproduce:
Using a portable (PAF) version of Thunderbird v. 8.0 Beta 2, I have repeatedly attempted to install Lightning 1.0 RC1.
Actual results:
-- Sometimes Lightning installation on Thunderbird Portable fails, returning an error in the add-ons screen.
--When Lightning does install, the calendar is lost when the Thunderbird Portable folder is moved to another location on the PC or elsewhere.
I suspect the most likely explanation is that something in the Lightning code is not totally limited to the Extensions or Profile sub-folders of the portable installation of Thunderbird.
Expected results:
Lightning v. 1.0 should install reliably on portable (PAF) versions Thunderbird v. 8.0. (There has never been any problem with running Lightning 1.0b7 on Thunderbird Portable 7.0.)
After installation, it should be possible to close Thunderbird Portable 8.0, move this Thunderbird Portable folder to another location on the PC or elsewhere, and then restart Thunderbird Portable with the Calendar functioning correctly.

Works fine for me.
I tested using Thunderbird Portable from http://stadt-bremerhaven.de/ + binaries from Thunderbird 8.0b2 on Windows 7. I don't know what you mean with PAF. Maybe your portable version is not really portable or broken or both?
PAF (Portable Applications Format) versions of Thunderbird are found at PortableApps.com and elsewhere, but for now the only PAF version of Thunderbird v. 8 to my knowledge is at http://portableappz.blogspot.com/

As long as this works with the non-portable version of Thunderbird, I rather think this issue should be raised with the developers of the portable apps platform. We don't do anything wacky that accesses files outside of the profile or extensions directory.
PROBLEM SOLVED. Works properly in Portable Thunderbird v. 8.0 Beta3 running Lightning 1.0 RC 2
