Using an <img> tag for the snippet icon is not semantic, as it is decorative and not content. An alternative way of displaying the icon is needed.

One possible replacement is that it should be the background-image of a div set to the appropriate size. There is an issue with this approach: How can we set the size of the div (or margin of the snippet text div) with arbitrarily sized images?

Things have changed a lot since this was reported. We're still using img and I don't believe we'll be working on this.
