User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 5.1; rv:8.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/8.0 Build ID: 20111104165243 Steps to reproduce: Just surfing on internet. Actual results: My memory usage usually is around 600-800. Yesterday, it went up to 1GB for an hour or so, and then eventually came back down. No video and audio is being played, just simple surfing around the internet. Usually has around 7 or 8 tabs open. This is similar to when I was using 7.0.1. But back then, my memory usage was usually around 400-500, very rarely exeeded 500. I thought FF 8.0 is supposed to improve memory, but it doesn't seem to be in my case. Thank you. Expected results: Memory usage should be around 300-400, like when I was using 7.0.1. Same number of add-ons and about same number of tabs opened.

This bug won't go anywhere without more specific steps to reproduce what you are seeing. For example, can you indicate a specific site where the memory usage has increased?

It increase and decrease continuously during on line. No specific website. But my processing usually range between 600-800, basically all the time, disregarding what website I am on. It has never been this high in 7.0.1. When I was using 7.0.1,it usually range between 300-400, the same surfing habit and number of add-ons. Nothing has been changed since upgraded to 8.0.
We really need more data or steps to reproduce to be able to move forward on this.

So what do you need? Just before I answered this blog, I was working on a WORD document, and wasn't using FF. Then I saw an email notification so I came back to FF and found your comment. I went to look at the Processing before sending this comment, and it was at 930,000K. I wasn't even using FF until I start typing this comment to you. So what else do you need?
Ed Morley [:edmorley] -- I have 41 add-ons installed. But as I mentioned in my earlier comment, I have used the same number of add-ons for FF6 and FF 7.0.1 and the memory usage is always around 300-400, until I upgraded to 8.0, it went up to over 900 at times. So I am sure there's nothing to do with my add-ons as all FF settings are identical to FF 6 and FF 7.0.1. It definitely have something to do with 8.0 version for the high memory usage.
It's possible one of the addons isn't playing nicely with changes made in Firefox 8, so could still be causing the problem. Could you try in safe mode just to help narrow down the cause, so we know what to suggest as next steps please - thanks :-)
OK, I'll do it as soon as I can since it'll take a lot of time for me to disable each of my 41 add-ons to see which one (if any) is causing the problem (at the same time, checking the processor as well). You know it'll be a pain to do so!
Just try safemode at first, which will disable them all. If the memory usage is good then, then we can maybe tell that it is an addon and not, say, a change in the websites you are browsing or how you are browsing.
Start by using safe mode, which disables all of them temporarily. If that is fine, run not in safe-mode, but disable half of the addons at a time. Then for whichever half causes the increased usage, try half of that, and so on (ie: bisect). Within 5 cycles of doing this, you'll have the list down to 2-3 addons :-)

In our experience, when someone reports excessive memory usage and they have more than 10 add-ons installed, it's *always* one of the add-ons causing it. Maybe you'll be the exception, but that explains why we're asking you to disable them first :)
So something was broken between 7.0.1 and 8.0, right? Since all the add-ons are the same.
If my add-ons are really the culprit, I afraid that I'll have the same problem continuously for any of the future upgrades since I haven't installed any new add-ons since 6.0. That's not good!
I'll post my update as soon as I find time to do the testing in Safe Mode. Thank you all for your attention.
My update: I started FF in Safe Mode and my memory usage is around 300,000k, with all add-ons disabled. So one of my add-ons might be the issue. However, I still believe the ultimate culprit is FF 8.0 because all my add-ons are the same as in 7.0.1 and no update has been installed for these add-ons since I upgraded to 8.0. So if they work properly in 7.0.1, they should work the same as in 8.0. If these add-ons caused my FF memory usage sky-rocket to 900,000k, the upgrade to 8.0 must have caused such behavior. I am not going to waste my time to go through each add-on to see which one is causing the problem because I just don't have the time, Luckily, I have enough memory and even FF uses 1GB, it'll still won't slow down my laptop. But for other users, they might not be that lucky. And I have a question, when FF 8.0 advertised "Improved performance and memory handling when using <audio> and <video> elements ". Does it mean only when users use audio or video elements? But does not improve the overall FF usage? From what I have read in Firefox Forum, many users have the same problem with the high memory usage since they upgraded to 8.0. So I really think this something Mozilla should concentrate on in their next release. I have been a FF user since it released its 1st version and I have been very happy with it. But if the memory usage leak does not improve and keep increasing in the future releases, I might have to use another browser. Thank you.

May even be a bug in 8.0 but if we would know the addon we may try to reproduce it and find a possible memory offender. So, it would be really appreciated.
