Offline cache access not very good at all (worse than before, 0.7)

When I fetch a set of pages like an article from www.salon.com and then
go offline (on windows) to read (using forward/back to scroll through
them), mozilla seems to want to access the network to display already
viewed and now stored in the cache pages.
Looking at the html, it could be that the page fetches javascript code
(from advert sites -- something else to forbid!) which it locks at --
but mozilla also says that it is fetching images (images.salon.com etc)
However 0.7 was much better at rendering cached pages than 0.8.
ALSO (this may or may not be connected), when I click on the on/off line
network plug at the bottom of the browser (when offline) and then
double click on an item in the history, the browser *crashes*.
