Build ID: 20111103063747
Steps to reproduce:
i need every search of my 'Inbox' to allow me to easily checkbox/include (or always include) the inbox 'Archives'.
i rely on 'quick filter search' and 1-line result sets to rapidly find items across 5 years of mail. but now i need to archive (hit 45,000)
i hesitate to archive for one reason only: i need every query of my "Inbox" to allow me to easily include "Archives" in that search and get the result set as 1-line rows.
Actual results:
i'm sure it can not do this yet and the result set for search "all folders" doesnt meet 1-line requirement like "advanced search' does.

Wolf, your question would be more suitable in the support forum:
http://getsatisfaction.com/mozilla_messaging/
You can try creating a Saved Search, starting from your inbox:
File > New > Saved Search
Then "Select the folders to search > Choose..." where you can tick to pick your desired folders. Also tick "Match all messages". This will create a virtual search folder showing all messages from exactly the selected set of folders, on which you can then quick filter or "Search Messages" (ctrl+shift+f).
Caveat: The set of folders to search is *static*, we have no way of automatically searching subfolders that are created after the Saved Search was created. Which is a usability problem, but perhaps not too bad or urgent (might want a followup bug for that). Another problem is that Quick Filter bar has lost Quick Search command for quickly converting quick filter into Saved Search (we might want think about that one, too).
Wolf, does that solve your problem?
I suggest to close this bug: worksforme (wfm)
thanks for illustrating the caveat as its the caveat that kills the workaround usability (for me). solutions must be dynamic' to be highly functional. i envision a simple "Include Archives" checkbox option built-into 'Quick filter' and "Search Messages" engines. that would give me full confidence that i can start archiving without fear i'll ever miss a message in any search just because its archived. thanks.

I agree this is WFM - the solution is available. A virtual folder can be defined to be FolderX+Archives.
quick filter by definition operates ONLY on the *current* folder. This isn't going to change. But that current folder can be a real folder, or a virtual folder. (and if that isn't acceptable to the author I suppose this bug is for better or worse wontfix)
