I should be able to have a shortcut from an email message to turn it to an event. Ideally Thunderbird/Calendar should guess where and when, but at least being able to have the email content in the description would be nice.
You can right-click an email message in the list and select Convert To -> Event

Where exactly would you want the menu to be placed?
Summary: Make event from email → Add option to convert mail to event/task to main menu

Where exactly would you want the menu to be placed?

The logical answer would seem to be in the 'Messages' menu. Just below the Archive, Copy To and Move To submenus. Exactly as it appears when you right click the message in the message list window
