thunderbird or its DNS resolv library are unable to handle larger hosts files resulting in total network operation failure

Details
When a bigger hosts file (2.8MB in this case) is used, thunderbirds DNS lookups fail. The Status bar says "Looking up <pop3/imap server>..." for quite a while and after... well Id estimate 2 minutes you get a popup telling you "Connection to server [...] timed out". (this is when trying to send / get mails)
This results in a complete failure of operation of thunderbird as you can no longer do ANYTHING network related within it.
Ive had one internet search engine hit telling me that someone using linux (gentoo) had the same problem and no fix was found either, but I cant verify this myself right now.

Thunderbird is using the DNS resolver from the operating system ...
manually resolving things with nslookup/ping works normally though.
