I've had snappiness problems for a while now (running Nightlies off of m-c). In trying to eliminate it, I've removed a nytimes.com apptab. Things feel better. Previously, I'd: - looked at about:memory, didn't see anything that seemed crazy - moved to a new profile, and used sync to transfer key data over. nytimes.com does a lot of ajaxy goodness to refresh the page automagically. It's possible there are event listeners registered and never cleaned up, or whatnot.
Just remembered that at the same time as I got rid of nytimes.com, I got rid of techmeme.com as well. That site is a lot less complicated, but it's possible they were doing something more stupid.
After running some 10hrs with NYT in a 'normal' tab, and another 10-11hrs todays as an App-tab leaving the tab in background I saw no abnormal increase in menory, about:memory shows about same footprint as CNN, MSNBC, or Neowin.net so nothing there either, and I didn't notice any hangs/slowdown when the tab reloaded in background. I'd say NYT was not the soul source of the problem.
Memory wasn't an obvious problem for me either, or crashes, or hangs. What I did notice was sluggishness on tab closing, tab switches, and sluggishness on page scrolls in particular. (aside: I tend to be logged in to nytimes.com -- while it's highly unlikely that the behavior is due to logged-in-only code, I mention it for completeness)
David, have you tried to reproduce this in safe mode? It could be an addon or something. Marking P3 for the moment until we can get somebody else to reproduce this, or David sees it in a clean startup. Also because it doesn't show up right away. Once we get some decent profiling tools that people can use, that would also be worth using to figure out what is happening for you.

David, is this something you still see? If so, a profile with https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Mozilla/Performance/Profiling_with_the_Built-in_Profiler would be good
