*** observed with 2001-02-27 build *** Steps to reproduce: - set up news account; - go File|Subscribe; - check a couple of newsgroup to subscribe ( bug for the painfully slow process was already entered on it); //note: there is no newsgroups under news.mcom.com, you have to re-start Nscp6 to see the effect

For some reason, on all platforms, we're missing the twisty icon now next to the newsgroup server (which creates this bug.) Build 2001022805 Win2K, and Linux 2001022808.

This is working for me using builds 2001030308 on Windows 2000 and build 2001030221 under Mandrake 7.2 with KDE. Marking worksforme.

Re-opening. This seems to work off and on, I just tested again with the same build (2001030308) and now news.mcom.com won't display its newsgroups. (But news.mozilla.org works fine.) This is strange, indeed.

related to bug 69684 possibly.

Somewhere in Bugzilla is a patch I wrote for the Location bar. That also doesn't update when you subscribe to newsgroups on a newly added server. However it does update when you subscribe or unsubscribe newsgroups on an existing server. Could this be a problem with the RDF not reflecting the update correctly?

accepting. this is related to bug #66018 I think this problem will show up if you migrate a profile and then go use the subscribe dialog in the same session. damn, I hate bugs #66018 and #70494
Status: REOPENED → ASSIGNED
I do not think this is realted to migrating profiles. I can reproduce it every time on OS/2 for both freshly created and migrated profiles. Restarting Mozilla shows the arrow.
In GetCacheElement, the Get on m_cacheElements is failing and createIfMissing is nt set, so GetCacheElement returns a failure. nsMsgFolderCache::GetCacheElement nsMsgDBFolder::GetFolderCacheElemFromFileSpec nsMsgDBFolder::ReadDBFolderInfo nsMsgNewsFolder::UpdateSummaryTotals nsMsgNewsFolder::GetSubFolders nsNntpIncomingServer::WriteNewsrcFile nsNntpIncomingServer::CommitSubscribeChanges

This bug is still existing on my 3 machines - Mandrake 7, Mac OS 9.1 and Windows 2000. The 2 bugs I marked DUPs of this, bug 72350 and bug 71228 are supposed to be fixed, but I still have to perform the workaround, namely, close mail/news and re-launch Mozilla. Then, and only then, do my subscribed newsgroups (from news.mozilla.org on port 119) show up.
BTW, I created all new profiles on those machines, with today's builds and still the problem was exhibited.
Can anyone tell me if I'm experiencing the same bug or should report a new one? description is somewhat vague on this one. I'm seeing the following on win32 2001031915 (first build I've had the problem with): after subscribing to a group, it seems to work ok, but the group never shows up and there is no way to read any newsgroups whatsoever with this build. this happens no matter what I use for a news server. news is completely broken in this build!
Seth, can you look into this please. In it's current state News will _appear_ broken to the majority of 0.8.1 users. Without a fix it will get little or no testing in the Milestone. Tested latest 0.8.1 candidate 031915 (appears in the trunk as well). I can create a news server fine. I can open the subscribe dialog and subscribe to newsgroups fine. Hitting OK dismisses the subscribe dialog as expected but the newly subscribed groups are not reflected in teh server pane. I still see the icon for a new server with no twisty and no subscribed groups. A restart of the entier App makes the groups appear. After that initial failure to appear all additional subscribes are reflected fine without a restart.

0.8.1 critical, targetting appropriately.
I'll look into this today. I'd like to fix this for 0.8.1, how much time do I have?
Seth, we'd like to have any fixes in before tomorrow morning's (hopefully) final builds. Also, I noticed on Mac that I cannot subscribe to most of the newsgroups on n.p.m.* still. The OK button depresses but is not dismissed so subscribe can't happen (modern and classic).
testing a one line fix...(at least for this problem) once I land this, I'll go take a look at the other problems you just mentioned.
cool, the fix works. here comes the patch. I'll land it on both the trunk and the branch.
that patch has been sr=mscott can I get an a=? (I'll explain the problem next)
a=asa (on behalf of drivers) new bug filed as bug 72750
fix checked into the tip, I'll mark it fixed when I land on the .0.8.1 branch.
fixed on both the branch and the trunk.

Verified fixed in build 2001032304 Mac OS 9.1, build 2001032308 on Mandrake 7.2 with KDE 2.0 and build 200103204 on Windows 2000. Subscribe works from a fresh profile.
