User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Linux i686; rv:8.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/8.0 Build ID: 20111104165243 Steps to reproduce: I added an account "Blogs and News Feeds." I then subscribed to a number of feeds which were entered in that folder. Actual results: Since then I have been unable to see email folders and their contents except for a period several days ago. Expected results: I should have been able to see both the news feeds and the emails.
(In reply to watchman from comment #0) So you lost all your e-mails? Did you lose IMAP or local folders? Did you just update Thunderbird?
No. The relevant files still appear in the profile folder and mail accounts are still listed in 'account settings'. I believe the emails are there but I can't see them. I have resurrected an older version of the profile (without the RSS feeds in it) and can see all emails when I use that profile.
(In reply to watchman from comment #2) I suggest you refer to: http://kb.mozillazine.org/Disappearing_mail
I have been through the article http://kb.mozillazine.org/Disappearing_mail I prepared a comprehensive reply but, instead of making any further comments, I have copied the older version of the profile and added the RSS feeds to it. So far, I can see the emails as well as the feeds. I am somewhat nonplussed because I have been using Thunderbird for several years only to view old emails; I have not been using it to read and send current emails. One oddity. The title bar reads [default]Blogs and News Feeds. '[default]' is new.
I spoke too soon. The email folders, sub-folders and emails are now invisible. I am going to use separate profiles for emails and feeds. This is the reply I was going to make yesterday: I have been through the article http://kb.mozillazine.org/Disappearing_mail I had already performed most of those checks. I use a Linux operating system so there is zero chance of a virus or other malware. I have now tried running Thunderbird in safe mode. That makes no difference. Using the 'repair' tool has no effect. I have set Thunderbird to view 'all'. In Thunderbird I see under the heading "Local Folders" the entries 'Inbox', 'Deleted' and 'Outbox'. 'Inbox' contains a largish number of (now invisible) sub-folders and there are other folders (also now invisible) than the three mentioned. None of the other folders, none of the sub-folders and none of the emails are visible. The relevant entries are, however, present in the profile folder. For several years now I have been using Thunderbird only to view old emails. During that time I have been using webmail for current emails and have not downloaded any emails with Thunderbird. I recently added a number of RSS feeds which are functioning well. As I mentioned, I am able to see all folders and emails in an older version of the profile. The only differences between the two versions of the profile are: 1. The older version contains no RSS feeds. 2. In the older version all email folders, sub-folders and emails are visible. 3. The older version was resurrected from a compressed archive. I have made a copy of the current profile and removed all feeds from it. On relaunching it, the previously invisible items were still invisible.
I have again resurrected a profile folder from an archive. So far, it is working well in this regard.

I spoke too soon. That profile stopped working. When I replace it with backups, they do not display 'Local Folders' either, even though the profile contains all the relevant files. I have added these comments in case anyone searches the issue. For the time being, I am using two profiles.

Looking for the cause of another problem, I searched the documents js.prefs and panacea.dat. Those files contained a reference to an old profile folder. Once I removed those references, the mail folders became visible again.
