705299 - Provide Mozilla emails to the active volunteers

Let's start recognizing volunteer Mozillians upon their active-dedication towards the community by giving out mozilla.net email ID for them. Not a status symbol, but it'll be a symbol of trust and the badge of hard-works for Mozilla, which they can use for the Mozilla specific purposes, officially.

The criteria of deserving, managing body, applying/vouching SOP etc. need to be decided.

I think it's a great idea to look into how we could provide Mozilla email addresses to active contributors, but I don't think we know which address would make sense at this point.  For instance, it might make sense to have @mozillians.org emails for people and use the phonebook profiles to identify contributors.

Sure, it can definitely be a more general way to start with.
Given the member-traffic, it'll be a good sandbox to probe the contributor's dedication towards Mozilla, if the next step has to be decided (later).

I think we should consider this option too.  IMO, figuring out the right email address to use isn't the blocker right now though.  

For next steps, we want to establish a new policy for giving Mozilla email addresses out (who gets them, how are they managed, etc) and then we can sort out what address to use.

Considering this, we should craft a post to the governance list with reasons why we should do this and ideas about what the policy would look like.

AFAIK, that's the last official word on the matter.  There may be a thread in the goverance post that has more details around this -- if someone has a chance to dig that up that would be helpful.

Exactly - that's the 2nd paragraph of my bug-description!

My suggestion is:
1. those who think they matter to the community, ask & get a @mozillian.org mail
2. the ones, whom the community thinks are important, gets an @mozilla.net mail

Starting an etherpad to work on a draft post to the governance list sounds like a good idea.  Could you set that up, link to it here and add any notes and ideas you have there?  I can take a pass at things there too.

+1 for the general idea of giving contributors email addresses as a small token of appreciation.  :Jeway, a contributor, asked for this today in #identity.

It seems like a simple email forwarding service + of course a Persona IdP would be a reasonable start..

Community IT are working on it! When the team is properly setup, I'll ask a few volunteers to create a workflow and drop it here.

I'm moving this to our component, simply because its a project that were planning and getting up and running

I head that you spoke about this in the reps council meeting, maybe we need to discuss what you thought over an IRC chat, Deb?
Also dropping this to normal priority. There's no reason for this to take a priority above our other projects. 

We're in the stages of setting up a workforce to get this going. I'll keep this bug updated with our stages of progress.

I think we're safe, at this point, to close as incomplete? There have been a number of dead end discussions, and we are providing mozilla branded emails at a regional level.

Unless anybody objects today, I'm going to close this. Until we have a decision from governance that means we can provide mozilla.org/net/com/something, there's not a whole lot for IT to do.

HOWEVER
.community was recently launched. We could consider mozilla.community email addresses... (I'm actually going to file to see if webops want to try registering that... It seems like a domain that could be useful at some point and is currently available)

A "closed" bug means it's no longer an open item. IMO it's not a closed issue but merely pending governance, which I think it stalled.

Perhaps. I'm not sure why it's part of Community IT anyways. I started the initial wiki pages but punted this over to ReMo & others for policy setting. Since @mozilla.org is managed by Mozilla (Corp), implementation is (currently) outside the scope of Community IT.
