This is part speed up for doing backupsnip in releases, part making it easier to import the existing snippets into Balrog.

There's a lot of crud buried in there that can be rationalised, eg
* assorted Darwin targets that aren't version appropriate
* partial snippets that are no longer relevant and can be removed
* blocked partner distributions (revisit if they can be unblocked, or blocked with less nulls)
* using symlinks instead of N copies of the same data
I think the deduplication that happened in bug 717214 might have covered some of this, or made it simpler.

Nick, still want to do this, or is Balrog close enough on the horizon?

I wouldn't do it just for the sake of cleaning up AUS2's datastore, but our strategy for switching to Balrog for beta+release might require it. As a first pass, we can iterate over the releases we have in various patcher configs, and compare output from AUS2 and Balrog. To catch special cases we would need to go grovelling around in AUS2 snippets, or even iterate over them, so some cleanup would be helpful. I don't mind if you prefer to dupe this over to bug 832466.

Bug 627617 has some specific cases around the Firefox 4.0 timescale, particularly around changes to the Mac BUILD_TARGETs. I wrote this wiki page around that time

This bug will be solved with a flame thrower and bug 1117962.
