We should investigate if prefetching CPU cache during the GC marking as outlined in "The garbage collection handbook" by Richard Jones, Antony Hosking and Eliot Moss, section 2.6, would speedup the marking phase of the GC.
I have a copy of this book on my desk in the MV office if anybody wants to borrow it.  Just email me to let me know if you do.
