Hello :)

1. Disconnect from the Internet ;)
2. start mozilla on a 'clean' system (without ~.mozilla)
2b. Let mozilla import the NS 4 preferences
3. Mozilla will try to load the startpage (but fail because you not connectet) -
Hit STOP
4. Edit/Preferences
5. Change something
6. Hit OK
7. Close Mozilla .....

...and your preferences are not saved :(

note: this error only occurs if mozilla _can't_ load the startpage

sorry: Build 2001030221

I think, it's not a very good build, eg. i can't start chatzilla :( ...
on friday i will get a new build and i will tell you, if i can repro this
problem agian (with the new build)

This bug seems to have something to do whit bug #69396

I testet it again:

And yes: when i start mozilla twice times (again: WHITOUT internet connection)
it works...

mass verification of WorksForMe bugs: to find all bugspam pertaining to this,
set your search string to "IfItWorksForSlappyTheSquirrelThenItWFM".

if you think this particular bug is *still* an open issue, please make sure of
the following before reopening:

a. that it's still a problem with ***recent trunk builds*** on the all
appropriate platform[s]

b. provide clear steps to reproduce (unless a good test case is already in the
bug report), making sure it pertains to the original problem (avoid morphing as
much as possible :)
