Since you didn't specify what port you were trying I am going to infer 119/tcp. Currently our ability to mitigate abuse on the guest network is limited because of a vendor bug. Services that can be also accessed through other means (in this case though Google or other http(s) means) should be done that way. We also block ICMP.

I was trying to use the default Thunderbird configuration for news servers, which looks like 119 TCP.

I'm seeing timeout errors today using the same configuration I was in comment 0. I haven't been in the office since this bug was resolved.

There is no inter dependency here. Two unrelated things. I'm not sure why, but the policy was reverted. I've put it back in. [root@admin1a.private.tor1 ~]# nc -vz -s 10.242.32.6 news.mozilla.org 119 Connection to news.mozilla.org 119 port [tcp/nntp] succeeded!
