When I press the power button in b2g-gonk, the screen takes an unexpectedly long time to shut off. I don't know where the delay is coming from. We shouldn't have that delay, unless someone has a persuasive argument otherwise.
The delay isn't from gecko code, at any rate. AFAICT the stock firmware has the same delay.
The solution is to blank the screen immediately (or with some animation) and then turn off the screen. We could do this in Gecko, but I think it makes more sense to do it in Gaia.
(On an OLED, black looks the same as screen-off, so you won't be able to see when the screen turns from black to off. But until the screen is off, I think it's receiving touch events, so the front-end would have to reject those.)
We're jumping to working around the delay before checking what might be causing it. Worth a peek; might be some silly config param.
FWIW, my Galaxy S II running stock Android seems to take about as long to turn off the screen as it does when it's running Gonk. With Android, it dims the screen a bit right when you click the button, which is pretty lame compared to the Nexus S CRT-wipe animation.
Yeah I would like to avoid all gecko-side hacks if possible. I'll take a look at the kernel code.
* mwu finds a sysfs attr to instantly turn off the screen <mwu> jlebar: /sys/class/lcd/ld9040/lcd_power <mwu> 4 to turn off, 0 to turn on <jlebar> \o/
ftw. Now just have to worry about portability ... :/
Not an officially supported device. Will cross this bridge again if we come to it.
