Details

User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 5.1; rv:8.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/8.0
Build ID: 20111104165243

Steps to reproduce:

Put focus on a msg in subject list. Click delete. The focus moves down one msg, then focus moves to the new msg's body. Delete key does nothing now. In other words, you can no longer do Del, Del, Del, to delete 3 consecutive emails. You now have to do a dance of mouse focus, delete, mouse focus on subject pane, delete, etc.

This used to work reasonably. 8.0 might have broke this.

Expected results:

Put mouse focus on msg subject pane. Del, Del, Del, should (used to) delete 3 msgs (etc). Focus now moves to the msg body and Del is ignored. IMO focus could move, if this is a new feature, but Del must still delete the msg.

Works for me here:
User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Linux i686; rv:8.0) Gecko/20111105 Thunderbird/8.0
Build ID: 20111105021619
are there config properties that control this behavior? I agree that something is up. One system running the dev branch is on Thunderbird v9 and doesn't have this problem. Some recent update on my laptop to v8 release branch made this change. I did not intentionally cause this change in behavior.
Any addons?
It does work fine for me on TB11.
Curt, please, could you answer to comment #3?
Can you start TB in safe-mode (view how-to start TB in safe-mode here http://support.mozillamessaging.com/bg/kb/Safe-Mode) to test if it behaves the same?

Thanks for that nudge to do a simple test. Restart with add on's disabled. With add ons and TB 8.0, still have the focus jumping to msg pane.

I upgraded to 9.01, no jumping focus. Ya. I added back addons, Compact Header 2.0, Extra folder columns 1.1.4, Dup contact mngr 0.8.1, lightening 1.1.

Too bad I didn't run TB 8.0 with addons turned off. I upgraded first.

In TB 9.01 I find that the delete key works even if the focus is forced into the msg pane. The focus stays in the msg pane after del, del, del, but delete and advance to the next msg works as expected.

I think someone fixed this. Or the combo of minor addons above conspired under v8 and now are friendlier under v9.

tnx alot for TB, curt
Probably a duplicate of bug 581932 then, which was indeed fixed in 9.0.

Running TB 9.01 now, All was fine, per my testing scenarios a few days ago, where the Del key worked always.

Was just deleting some emails and noticed the Del key doesn't work bug is back when the focus goes away from the subject line and subject line turns grey. I bounced TB 9.01 and the Del key desired function was back. :( I'm a developer so I appreciate how much an intermitant bug like this is a pain.

Next time this happens I'll do more testing to capture more help for you.

Good luck, curt

FYI, Del key was working, maybe it was another dip back to the IMAP server, and poof Del key stopped working when subject is not in focus. It happened right in front of my eyes, without a hesitation... To me this exonerates plugins since there was no restart. Plus this bug goes away on a TB bounce so restarting with plugins off will fool the tester that it's a plugin problem.. Grrr :(

curt
reporter, do you still see this problem when using a current version?

This bug just came back with 38.2.0.

Really annoying (!) when the focus jumps from the list pane to the message pane by itself and keyboard control to view or delete messages is lost until a mouse click back in the list pane re-selects the desired message.

But then focus jumps again and the fight begins anew.

Tried to change this bug to "regression" and re-activate, but no luck. Hate to file a new report on an old bug.
It's generally not useful to reopen very old bugs just because you have a similar issue. It's better to file a new bug, since we have no way of knowing if you're seeing exactly the same bug, or merely something similar.

Also, we'd need steps to reproduce this issue to have any hope of fixing it. I tried a few test cases in 38.2 and all of them work fine for me.
Sorry. Steps to reproduce:
 1. Install 38.2.0.
 2. Follow steps and narrative in this bug report.

Exactly the same.

@Jim Porter, if you can place the focus in the list pane by selecting a message, then NOT have the focus auto-jump to the message preview pane, if you're running 38.2.0, then some other variable is in play, perhaps OS. (Though that would not be expected.)
I don't see any focus changes. Also, even if I *manually* focus the message pane, I can still delete messages.
Thanks for the confirmation. With that, I took another look at plugins.

Very strange results, but problem is gone now. Here's what I did:

 1. Start in safe mode. Observe bug is gone. Conclude trouble is with a plugin.
 2. Start normally. Observe bug is back.
 3. Looking for the culprit, disable first plugin. Arbitrarily begin with Stationery.
 4. Observing bug is gone with Stationery disabled, convict it as the cause.
 5. To verify, restart Stationery. Observe problem behavior does NOT return. *WTH?*
 6. Close TB, restart normally. No trace of bug.
 7. Repeat 6. Bug stays gone.

So with all plugins enabled as before, behavior has returned to normal.

Anyone experiencing this bug may want to try toggling plugins. Weird, but it worked for me.

We now return this bug report to its former necro state.
