I no longer see the "check for updates" button on about | Aurora
Guessing that has been removed as part of silent update, and now the action burried under:
preferences | advanced | update | and tied to a button named "show update history"
I think there is a problem with both the name of the button (I don't want to look at the history; I want to run a check to see if my browser is up to date), and the fact that we are making it so complex to find the action now.
This sill surface more as we do more complex roll outs as we are doing with firefox 9, and put bits up for download and not into the update channel. Some users will get word of the new release though the press and want to check for updates.
is there a better component for update system bugs?

Nope. General has been used, except when prefs are involved.

Current version 61 has "check for updates" in the General section of Options
