Actual results: Firefox crashed. The same way it's been crashing several times every day for months now. It happens out of the blue and not only when I'm doing something. Sometimes it crashes when the comp is idle. I think the crashes started around the time Facebook started using that ridiculous ticker. I've run my Norton Antivirus scan, my Spybot scan, and I've tried it with Firefox in Safe Mode. It still crashes. Expected results: It shouldn't have crashed. Please help? I love Firefox and I don't want to have to switch to Chrome! My crash report is bp-34f0e856-8db5-4c3d-b8e0-5f98c2111227 Thank you for all of the hard work you guys do!

You already did most of the basic "did something bad get installed" checks, but could you try one more for me, starting with a new profile, and seeing if it still crashes?
Sure. I'll start now and let you all know. Thank you for your help! It's driving me crazy. It crashed 4 times today so far.
Btw, I was just looking at some other bugs, and I ran into bug 712883, which looks like it could be related, since it also has to do with Facebook updates. Do your crashes happen only with Facebook open (including having it open in a tab), or do they also happen in Facebook is not open? (Bug 712883 says in part that much "more" runs in FB now, and I'm thinking it could be running you out of memory, because the crash is a null-pointer error.)
It happens even when FB is not open, but FB had been open earlier and then closed. I have 4Gb of RAM and I regularly clear my cache when I notice Firefox lagging a bit from FB use. I will also shut down Firefox and restart it if it's particularly bad. FB is definitely affecting Firefox but until someone comes up with a way to eliminate the ticker I don't know what else to do.
Yep. It just crashed with the new profile too. Only took 15 minutes.

Could you try a nightly build from before there (say, from May 1 or so) and see if it still crashes in that version?
Um...how do I do that? I just Googled "facebook ticker" and saw that they started rolling it out around August 19th. I then brought up my about:crashes page. Here's a copy. Does this help? (There was a short time period of a few days when the reporting feature was turned off.) UPDATE #1 I've been running Firefox for the last couple of hours without opening Facebook and no crashes so far. UPDATE #2 I just installed the Social Fixer add-on for Facebook, opened it and disabled the ticker. No crashes so far. I'll be leaving Facebook open and I'll let you know if Firefox crashes.
OK. Glad to hear things are somewhat better. By the way, I did look at about 10 of the reports you linked. It's crashing in several different places, and mostly null-pointer errors. So I really suspect some kind of out-of-memory issue. Hopefully disabling the ticker will fix it (assuming you're ok with that). Otherwise I would be curious how much memory you have. If it is out-of-memory, to make progress on that, we'd probably have to send you some special builds that crash closer to the point of the problem.
I've got a Pentium D CPU, 2.80 GHz and 4.0 GB RAM but it only shows 3.5 in the My Computer properties thingie, maybe cause I'm using the 32 bit version of XP. I was warned that might happen when I bumped up the RAM from 2 to 4 back in August. I'm ok with disabling the Facebook ticker cause I can't stand the thing. But I'm concerned that this is only putting a bandaid on the problem and I'd prefer to find out what's really wrong. Of course I know you are all volunteers and there must be zillions of issues that you need to address so I appreciate all the work you've done so far and if you need to focus on more pressing problems I understand. BTW, Facebook has been open since my last post (about 3 hours or so) with no crashes (yay!) but I'm starting to notice a little bit of lagging so I'll be clearing my cache and shutting down and reopening Firefox.
Many people who work on Firefox are full time employees including David Mandelin and myself, so don't worry about causing work for us. If your problem is something that other people are experiencing, then if we can figure out something that helps you, we may be able to improve Firefox for other people. So your help is appreciated. Of course, it could just be something that is specific to you. :) When it starts getting laggy, go to about:memory and click on verbose. Then select the entire page, copy it into a text file, and upload that here. That will let us see if you are running low on memory. 3.5 gigs of RAM should be plenty, assuming you aren't loading a ton of tabs and images.

Hi again! Remember me? :) Since you guys said my crashes appeared to be memory-related, I d/led a program called Memtest86 and tested my RAM. Lo and behold, one of my 4 was bad. So I removed it and I'm now running with 3 GB. If I crash again I'll let you guys know. If I don't crash again I'll also update you so that you'll know that it was me and not FF that was the problem. Thank you for everything!

This is very interesting because there are other unexplained crashes in JavaScript, and I have speculated that they could be caused by memory errors, but we never had any evidence one way or another.
I haven't crashed at all since I took out the bad memory. I can use my FF again! Yay!!! Thanks again for all your hard work, guys!
Resolved "invalid" since it wasn't a bug in Firefox. But thanks for reporting and working through it with us--I learned something about these crashes.

Seriously? It's a free program. We're lucky it exists and we can use it and we're even luckier that you guys are working on it and trying to help us, particularly those of us with very old computers and not a lot of knowledge. Thank you!!!
