If a user uploads an animated/multiframe GIF, when we convert it to PNG (as we now do with all uploaded images), the gif loses its animation. Perhaps have an exception for animated gifs and don't convert/compress those would be a good solution.

Yes please! We don't use animated gifs often but they do make a good option when a video is overkill.

Verified able to add an animated gif, preview it and display it in an article.
