Steps to reproduce:

Step 1: Check View -> Display Attachments Inline

Step 2: In Preferences -> Advanced -> Reading & Display either uncheck "Automatically mark messages as read" or else make sure there is a delay

Step 3: In the message list of an IMAP account, click on an unread message that has an inline image.

Step 4: Unheck View -> Display Attachments Inline and repeat step 3


Actual results:

When Display Attachments Inline is checked, the message is immediately marked as read when clicked. When it is unchecked, it works correctly. This only happens for messages with embedded images.


Expected results:

When Display Attachments Inline is checked, this should have no effect whether the message is marked as read or not.

When my messages are marked as read immediately, Both those with attachments and those without them are marked as read once I click on them. 

Why is it in the video you attached the message with no attachment is not marked as read although you clicked on it?

Hashem,

The one that is not marked as read when I click on it is the one that is behaving correctly. It is the other one that isn't. As I mentioned, this only happens for messages with embedded images. Whether or not it has an actual attachment has no effect.

I tried to do a bit more testing and noticed some very inconsistent behavior, however I noticed the following:

- Not all of the ones with embedded images seem to produce this effect, however it is a common denominator for all of the ones that do.
- If I take one of the messages that produce this error and move it from one IMAP folder to another it stops producing this error - even if I move it back to the original folder.
- If I save the message that produces the error as a .eml file (Ctrl-S), it stops producing the error.
- If I drag the file I saved back into Thunderbird, the new email doesn't produce the error.
- Restarting Thunderbird or the IMAP server has no effect and if a message stops producing the error, it won't anymore.

I have no idea what is actually causing it to happen and I can't seem to reproduce it with any accuracy.

I have not had this issue occur for many years now. It must have been fixed somewhere along the way. Marking as resolved.
