I also have this problem, and I can confirm that this problem continues to exist in Safe Mode.
User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Macintosh; Intel Mac OS X 10.7; rv:9.0.1) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/9.0.1
OS: Mac OS X 10.7.2
When Firefox 9.x is running, there are freezing episodes several times an hour where Firefox will hang with a spinning wheel and other programs are sluggish to respond. These do not necessarily correspond to user activity within Firefox; sometimes FF is in the background when this happens. I don't see any unusual paging or CPU activity during these episodes.
I have also observed this behavior on a different computer (also an Intel Mac with OS X 10.7.2).
This began to happen after upgrade from 8.x to 9.x and it is incredibly frustrating! I am filing this bug from Google Chrome. :(

The reporter of this bug reported "laptop keeps freezing up" and not that Firefox froze.

Yes, to be clear, it is more than just Firefox that is freezing up. When the spinning wheel appears, almost all programs are unresponsive. I am able to click on the title bar of windows to change which window is on top, but I can not interact with the programs in the windows.
If I discontinue the use of Firefox, this problem does not happen, which is why I'm attributing the problem to Firefox and reporting the issue here.
FYI: this behavior looks a lot like the behavior reported in bug 714473, 718365, 713303, and 718077.

Hi Nanci. Thanks for letting us know. I am going back through some older bugs and wondering if your issue has resolved.
Evan, Thanks for your report as well. Are you still having problems with Firefox slowing or a spinning icon?
If so: You might want to try some of the ways to resolve this:
https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/firefox-hangs-or-not-responding
Without more specific information I am going to close this bug in 1 week.
