When replying to a newsgroup message, the icon on the Compose window toolbar for spell-checking is disabled.  I can spell-check from the Compose window menu bar via [Options > Check Spelling].  

This might be another instance of bug #716481.  However, the Description of that bug report very specifically points to a Compose window launched by selecting a mailto: URI.  This bug, however, is seen when replying to a message by selecting Reply to, either via a Thunderbird toolbar icon or a pull-down context menu.  

I reproduced this problem in Safe Mode.

And did you see any errors in Tool->Error console ?

This is a sporadic problem that I cannot duplicate at will.  It did happen again about 2 days ago.  The next time it happens, I will capture the Error Console and attach it to this bug report.

Lo and behold!  Shortly after posting my previous comment, I went to reply to a newsgroup message and found the Spelling button disabled.  I copied the Errors and Warnings from the Error Console and uploaded them as an attachment to this bug report.  

Because bug #68951 is not yet implemented, I had to copy each entry individually and paste it into an ASCII editor.  Since bug #122213 is not implemented in the current end-user release of Thunderbird, there are no time-stamps; so I cannot tell whether any of these entries actually relate to the problem.  (Bug #122213 is supposed to be implemented in Thunderbird 11.)

This seems to me a duplicate of bug 716481 - since you filed this bug, its been identified as more than just when clicking on a mailto link.
