Challenge: Bold/Strong tags should only be used sparingly and typically on no more than 2-25 characters per page.

Currently, The Den uses Bold/Strong on the following 1,325 characters:

The Den - Things to Start: - Saving Money - Traveling - Learning a New Language (kinda) - Things to Stop: - Overeating - Stressing Out - Smoking - Share this on Facebook - Share this on Twitter - Tablet tabs are terrific! - It’s built for two-handed browsing - You control your own experience - One-touch bookmarks give easy access - Your desktop “stuff” follows you wherever you go - Developers have cool new functionality - Share this on Facebook - Share this on Twitter - 10 Reasons to Upgrade to the Latest Firefox Version - It’s free! - It’s easier than you might think. - It’s fast. - It’s more stable. - It’s more secure. - You can keep all your bookmarks! - mproved memory usage. - It’s easy to search with Firefox. - You’ll join 100 MILLION people on the most modern version of Firefox - you’ll be supporting the Mozilla mission - Share this on Facebook - Share this on Twitter - Share this on Facebook - Share this on Twitter - Share this on Facebook - Share this on Twitter - Share this on Facebook - Share this on Twitter - Share this on Facebook - Share this on Twitter - Share this on Facebook - Share this on Twitter - Instant Website ID - Anti-Phishing & Anti-Malware - Anti-Virus Integration - Plugin Check - Customized Security Settings - Secure Passwords - Share this on Facebook - Share this on Twitter

Recommendation: Remove the <strong> tag from all of the above and go back to normal type.

Hi Chrissie,

Hmmmm. I was always taught to use formatting to help make longer text more easily readable. Do you have a suggestion on how to break up long text? Does italics affect SEO?

I can take out the bold tags in the copy. I'll have to cc Craig Cook on this bug to have him un-bold the share on Facebook/Twitter ones. I think that's coded in.

Formatting text does help with readability, but in this case, the page is rendering to search engines with too many bold tags. Right now, since you're at the beginning of your publication you should be conservation and follow the seo rules as closely as possible, bolding only keywords.

Italics are a great option!

Anything over on the right rail of the design, etc. should not have bold text, but could instead have an H4 or H5 style to differentiate them from regular <b> or <strong> tags.

You could also work with a developer to have H4 and H5 styles added to your Wordpress text editor in the dropdown, so you can easily increase readability without sacrificing seo strategy.

All bold (strong) copy removed from the posts.

Chrissie - can you help me find the "Share this on Facebook - Share this on Twitter" sections that are bolded? All I can see is the Facebook button and the Twitter button. Maybe it's in the code, that I don't see? If you can help me find it, I'll assign the bug to remove it. :)

Hey Carmen, it's all in the markup, so Craig or another webdev will have to edit it from within the code itself.

Hi Mike -

There are several SEO issues with The Den (blog.mozilla.com/theden) that Chrissie has helped identify. Several are things I need help to do from WebDev.

Can you please put this in the queue to remove the bold "Share this on Twitter" and "Share this on Facebook" in the code? If you'd prefer, I can also assign it directly to Craig if you'd like - but I wanted to make sure I followed the process first.

What kind of timeframe could we set for this? Two weeks? Can you please advise?

Thanks!
