On both my computers today (MBP and iMac), Nightly updated itself as usual, but when replacing the dock icon I got an "application broken" icon instead and it would not open anymore.

I was able to re-download Nightly from nightly.m.org, but I noticed that it's not called Nightly anymore, but FirefoxNightly. Not sure if that's a new change or if that caused the problem though.
There isn't anything app update can do directly about application renames (bug 696436) breaking the application. App update does provide the ability for an application to perform post update actions using an application specific binary but there are other problems with this that are pretty much insurmountable when the app bundle name is changed which is why channel switching was removed.

Moving over to Firefox -> General due to the above.

Summary: Today's Nightly update broken on Mac → App bundle rename done in bug 696436 broke Mac
I doubt that this has anything to do with bug 696436 - that change landed a while ago.

I've seen issues with the icon being missing before, but I always thought they were caused by OS X choosing to update its icon while we were in the process of copying over the new bundle - after some files had changed, but before we copy over the new icon file.

That wouldn't explain the bundle actually failing to run afterwards, though. Did the update process get interrupted? Do you have the old bundle around still to debug?

I do. However, when I started it now it does start and it was yesterday's nightly. I upgraded and it worked without a flaw, sigh.

I am willing to close this bug since I am now unable to reproduce it.
Haven't seen this in a long time.
