ahah, okay, so here's what happened. Somehow this machine was still on FF8. I upgraded once to FF9, and it opened up the FF9 what's new tab:

https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/9.0.1/whatsnew/

Then, I upgraded right away to FF10. It restarted and opened up existing tabs, including the one for FF9.

I guess that header at mozilla.org should detect FF version and not display that message, right?
After this failed, I clicked "Download the latest version"
this allows the user to attempt download of the Android version, when surely Firefox must realise it is running on a Desktop machine

next step is to click Desktop tab in image 3/3
So... there is a version compatibility flagging issue here.
btw I am on v.14.0, but I cannot change the Version # on this page, since I am not the originator of the post.
just ran this again just now, and the auto update succeeded this time, however the version number did not update - it is still 14.0
this is what my firefox does! every day after i power my mac down and turn it back on the first time i open firefox it tells me i have a new update, but nothing will ever download

I believe this was sometimes due to the website not being updated at the time of release. I believe the release procedures are much better these days, so marking as WFM.
