(Whiteboard: [Halloween2011Bug])

The Newsgroup Subscribe dialog currently has a statusbar that provides
information about the loading and population of the newsgroup list. This
information is only provided, and only necessary, the first time the user opens
the dialog for a given news server. Every other time, it just takes up space,
looks ugly, and says "Done".

So, I propose that we do what Internet Explorer 5.5 for Windows does, namely
show a modal dialog above the Subscribe dialog with a warning that it might
take a long time depending on your connection (I'll leave the wording/existence
of this text up to the gurus), the necessary progress information, and a Cancel
button. Since this would supercede the need for a statusbar in the dialog, the
dialog wouldn't have one.

This is better because:

* as far as the user is concerned, the statusbar really shows the progress of
loading the window (i.e., there's nothing for the user to do in the window
until the list is fully populated and ready).

* the modal dialog prevents the user from trying to interact with the dialog
before it's ready.

* it removes the unsightly, seemingly out of place statusbar.

Of course, I'm open to better designs. Thoughts?
Well, that's wrong. opening the subscribe dialog when the server has just
added thousands of groups obligates the same progress as when the server is
first added. OTOH if you kill this status for all cases (to which I am
opposed) then at least you're consistent (and IMO wrong).
Potential problems: bug 40260, bug 59509.

Ack. This is ugly.
So, Håkan, how would you deal with bug 40260 and bug 59509 without a progress
meter in the status bar? I think it's preferable to allow the user to subscribe
to groups while new groups (and message counts) are still downloading, than to
make them wait until the end.

If this were a Mac-only app, we'd probably be using asynchronous arrows for
this, but we're not. :-)
