I have seen this.  It seems like the copying operation sometimes doesn't work, especially if you switch to another app quickly.

I have the same Problem with TB 22 even in safe mode. All add ons are disabled. It is intermittent at times. Sometimes it will work, but most of the time not. This function worked in Version 21. I ever tried copying from MS Word and pasting to Firefox Write, and it would not paste. This is definitely a problem since it is present in safe mode besides regular mode with all add ons disabled. Should be fixed ASAP, since it really causes problems. Also, the color change doesn't work. It will show it changed, but the text will remain black. This is the WORST version of Thunderbird in a long time.

I confirm this. 4MLinux developed by me (www.4mlinux.com) uses Wine to run Win32 version of Firefox under Linux. 
Paste and copy does not work correctly when running Firefox 22 under latest stable Wine (i.e. 1.41). It is possible to copy any text only once, and after this, the paste function becomes inactive when I want to use it by clicking the right mouse button. It used to work flawlessly with Firefox 21 (and any earlier version). No special error messages are generated by Firefox (and Wine). Downgrading Firefox (to v. 21) removes the problem completely.

Ronald, Thanks for the info. But if problem exists for you in Firefox/Thunderbird 22 and not in 21, then this might not be the right bug report for you.

I just checked and my version of TB is 23. Still do not have the copy/paste function in this program even though my copy of Word 10 works flawless with this same function. I use Copy and Paste extensively, so not having it available really limits my use of a program that doesn't have this working as I am finding to be the case with TB 23. Sounds like they made some extensive changes between TB 21 and 22. Originally I thought that the problem might be my wireless Logitech Keyboard, but have a regularly wired Keyboard that is connect to the computer and the Control C, Control V does not work either. Both of these keyboards work with Word 10 using Control C, and Control V. Actually when I got to the Pull Down menu of TB, the paste function is not listed (greyed out) after I do a copy command. There is a problem, and I have confirmed that by using the copy/paste command in another program. It is a BUG!!!!
