Steps to reproduce:
I ran ThunderbirdPortable.exe -setDefaultMail
Actual results:
A shortcut (icon) to Thunderbird was placed on my desktop (and, I believe, the desired behavior occured).
Expected results:
No shortcut should have been created.

Thunderbird.exe -setDefaultMail does indeed create a shortcut.
Is creating a desktop shortcut a regression?
If it is, then perhaps it changed between when Bug 252971 was filed and when Bug 619718 was fixed
probably Firefox has similar results with -setDefaultBrowser
