Details
Sometimes, holding down on a link causes the open link in new tab menu only to appear after a significant delay -- more than five seconds in some cases.
The easiest way to reproduce this is to go to a website with lots of links, such as Hacker News, and open a bunch in a row without switching to any of the new tabs. After a few, it will start to take a while.

This might be a problem when there is a lot going on in background tabs, making Fennec slow.
Does this happen when you have a site like http://planet.mozilla.org in the background loading?

As I said, this only ever happens after at least one tab has been already opened, so Martijn's hypothesis is possible. But I don't need to have anything slow-loading in the background to make it happen.

Sam: if you could produce a specific steps to reproduce, e.g.:
- Reboot phone
- Start Aurora
- Load page http://foo.com (a static page)
- Long press on the first 12 links on the page and choose "Open in new window"
-> The menu will take > 5 seconds to open for the 13th one
that would be helpful.

Ok, here goes:
- Reboot phone
- Start nightly
- Visit http://punge.ccs.neu.edu/~samth/tmp/ [which I created for this purpose]
- Long-press each link in order, until it either pops up the "open in new tab" menu or the highlight goes away.
- Once you've long-pressed a link without the menu appearing, immediately do it again.
- Eventually, you get the "open in new tab" menu.
- Select "open in new tab".
- Note that you still have an identical menu, even though the tab has opened.
Another way to reproduce:
- Open nightly.
- Open a lot of tabs (10+)
- Open an app the uses a lot of memory (like XUL Fennec with a lot of tabs)
- Switch back to nightly, so that the above page with lots of links comes up
- Repeat the above process of long-pressing.

Please re-open if Sam can reproduce. I have not seen this on any channel on a variety of devices.

Sorry for not responding more recently. I've seen this on Nightly on my Nexus 7 recently (but much much more rarely than in Feb/Mar when I reported it). I'm judging slowness by ability to reproduce bug 724860.
