725630 - Profile display names are not unique

The site accepts same display names for two or more different accounts or users.
As I have been told that this was the design decision taken while designing the site.

This can be a problem while displaying the ranks of the users on the Leader-board of the site.Two users with the same display name may enter the ranking system of the leader-board and it may thus lead to confusion among the users.

I prefer not accepting same Display names and thus avoid confusion on the Leader-board.

This can be a huge problem when the number of users increase which may thus lead to a lot more Display name clashes or collisions.

Is the intent that users aren't required to have unique display names? comment 0 seems fair. 

If we began enforcing unique names would this break existing users who have already chosen names for themselves?

We're only displaying 5 profiles in the leaderboard so this seems like a low probability event. If that ever happens, we could disambiguate with profile pictures.

If we fixed it though, that makes the registration process harder because you need to find a unique display name.

So I'm in favor of leaving it as is. Mkelly: what do you think?
