If you send a mail message, and it never connects to the SMTP server, it never
tells you so. Instead, it just consumes most of your CPU, continually trying to
connect.

If you close all the Mozilla windows, the process stays alive consuming CPU
cycles until you kill it. If you kill it, whatever messages you tried to send
are gone (they never make it to the Sent folder).

To test, set your smtp server to some bogus IP address such as 192.168.254.254
(assuming that address is not on your network).

I've been seeing this since about 3/16 on Windows 2000, but maybe it has been
happening longer (I don't often set bogus SMTP servers :). Still happens on
2001-0319-15 / Win32.

I use a laptop which I carry between two networks. I've got multiple SMTP
servers set up (merle.it.northwestern.edu, mail.mindspring.com). If the server
for the network I'm on is not set as Default in the SMTP server list, then I run
into the problem. (i.e. having merle set to the default when connected through
Mindspring).
If I kill the process, then the mail being sent is lost (no copies in sent or
unsent folders).
Many connection/alert related mailnews bugs have been fixed since this bug was
filed. Is it still an issue?
You're right, build 2002052809-trunk on Win2k worksforme -- it displays an
appropriate dialog saying that it can't connect to the SMTP server, check your
settings, etc.
