would like to gather whether it is possible for me an admin to snapshot my virtual machine on a regular basis. 

What would it take to do this on say a monthly basis ?

Generally I would like to do this as a manner of managing the risk that the machine dies a horrible death in the future.

Taking a manual snapshot right now.

A simple cron job will do the trick.

I'll setup a monthly snapshot for now, until labs grows a more extensive backup mechanism.
