Tested with the latest Maple branch: http://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/firefox/nightly/latest-maple/ I see black thumbnails all the time in the tab list popup and in about:home

Assume you mean latest-maple-android, and latest isn't a good reference for this bug in the future. Today: 20120213040241 http://hg.mozilla.org/projects/maple/rev/f290028f4842

as discussed on #gfx, its intended to be an optimization for the currently selected tab to take the screenshot directing from what's already been rendered to screen rather than re-rendering itself. Jeff will fix that for OGL layers in a follow up.
