I see black thumbnails all the time in the tab list popup and in about:home

as discussed on #gfx, its intended to be an optimization for the currently selected tab to take the screenshot directing from what's already been rendered to screen rather than re-rendering itself. Jeff will fix that for OGL layers in a follow up.
