I was unable to reach http://planet.mozilla.org and finally realized it was because I use EFF's HTTPS-Everywhere (<https://www.eff.org/https-everywhere>). By default it converts Mozilla web sites (including planet) to HTTPS, but planet doesn't support HTTPS.

See bug 706346. There are no plans to support SSL on planet.mozilla.org. Isn't this a bug in HTTPS Everywhere (trying to use SSL when there's no response on planet.mozilla.org:443)?

Per their FAQ they can't test in real time:
https://www.eff.org/https-everywhere/faq/
Looking at the rule code, it looks like they would need to exclude planet.mozilla.org. I've sent an email to their rules mailing list. Lets see where that goes.

The exclusion shipped a while ago, so this bug can either be closed or retitled "please add HTTPS support to planet.mozilla.org" :)
