Jberkus has suggested that since our versioning is arbitrary, we use the third digit to indicate a point release and stick to two digits for our normal release versions. This would simplify sorting release numbers for some bugs he is working on. During the March 07 2011 socorro meeting we discussed simplifying this further to a single version, like FF, with dots for point releases(5, 6, 6.1, 6.2, 7, 8). The point release dots will help prevent mass migrations of bugs for one and two commit pushes. There was general agreement that this was a good idea (and no objections were raised), so I'm filing here for an final comments. Implementing this will mean picking a date to switch versions, and asking the good folk that manage Bugzilla to change our milestone numbers.
above, second paragraph, should read "singe version number, like FF". Socorro 3, 4, 5, 6, 6.1, 6.2 (bad release), 7, 8, 8.1, 9... etc.
Next version after after 2.5.2 will be 3!
The 3 release may warrant a change in the docs / mailing list post / blog post for our external consumers.
