Opening this bug and assigning to Jinghua for content outline: Blog Name: -Mozilla UX Blog Tagline: -Please add copy Categories -Boot to Gekco -Firefox -Firefox for Mobile -Interaction Design -Gaia -Marketplace -Pancake -Persona -Thunderbird -User Research -Visual Design -Apps Marketplace -Other Projects Sub-navigation to static pages: -Team (static page that lists photo/bios of team members similar to http://blog.mozilla.com/userresearch/who-we-are/) -Mozilla Style Guide (naming should be coordinated with JSlater if separate from the Brand Toolkit to keep things clear for users - will this be a direct link? if so, please list destination URL) -Test Pilot (direct link to https://testpilot.mozillalabs.com/) ********** Of note, this content will not be inside of the main blog, so it won't show up as related content when posts are made from the product blogs like Firefox, B2G, etc. That's a bit of a downside on having a separate blog v. a more integrated approach.
If we want to change the blog name from "Mozilla UX" to "Mozilla User Experience", will that be too long to appear to end users?
About categories: Are these categories, or tags? Can one post appear under more than one categories?
Can we add test pilot to the list of categories, which I'm assuming is the same as tags? And "Apps Marketplace" should be changed to "Mozilla Marketplace" As for the tagline - the UR short description was: This is where we'll share our latest research questions and problems. We'll also report the findings from our qualitative and quantitative research studies. We hope you'll respond with ideas and questions of your own. and on the who we are page it said: We’re a fun lovin’ bunch dedicated to helping design great products that make sense and bring joy to people. So we could have a short description on the UX blog that said: We’re a fun lovin’ bunch dedicated to helping design great products that make sense and bring joy to people. But if someone wants to make that sound a lot better, that would be great. :) So we could change that to This is where we'll share our latest user expereince design and research projects. We hope you'll
disregard "So we could change that to This is where we'll share our latest user expereince design and research projects. We hope you'll" from the above comment.
@jinghua -Mozilla User Experience will take up a lot of horizontal space, I'd advise: Mozilla UX, but let's finesse during implementation -These are the categories that appear on the right rail of the design -Posts may appear in multiple categories @diane -The One Mozilla theme does not accomodate that long statement, but rather a tagline. You can include that statement on the About page -Tagline: The latest user on experience design and research projects (or some variation of that) How does this look: Blog Name: -Mozilla UX Blog Tagline: (pick one or add one within this character limit) -The latest user on experience design and research projects -Dedicated to designing great products that make sense and bring joy Categories -Boot to Gekco -Firefox -Firefox for Mobile -Interaction Design -Gaia -Mozilla Marketplace -Pancake -Persona -Test Pilot -Thunderbird -User Research -Visual Design -Apps Marketplace -Other Projects Sub-navigation to static pages: -Team (static page that lists photo/bios of team members similar to http://blog.mozilla.com/userresearch/who-we-are/) -Mozilla Style Guide (naming should be coordinated with JSlater if separate from the Brand Toolkit to keep things clear for users - will this be a direct link? if so, please list destination URL) -Test Pilot (direct link to https://testpilot.mozillalabs.com/)
Chrissie Thanks for clarifying and for updating the category list. As for the tagline - let's do: Dedicated to designing great products that delight our users Jinghua - what do you think?
Re: Tagline: I vote for this too: Dedicated to designing great products that delight our users Re: Blog name Ok, let's go with "Mozilla UX" now. Re: Categories: They look fine to me. Are we able to also indicate the number of posts for each category? (Just an idea, if it takes time to implement, it is fine too.) Re: Sub-navigation Yes, these three pages look right to me for now.
(In reply to mcbmoz from comment #0) > -Mozilla Style Guide (naming should be coordinated with JSlater if separate > from the Brand Toolkit to keep things clear for users - will this be a > direct link? if so, please list destination URL) Slater and I talked about this. The long term idea is for a single source to reference for all Mozilla design. Short term we have some interaction and visual design guidelines we would like to post so we can reference them for current feature work. It will be a direct link but it will probably need more than one page if that is doable?
@shorlander What should the sub-nav item be called "Mozilla Style Guide" or something else? Also, this will launch by March 29, 2012, will you have something by then, or should we hold off on this item and add at a later date (you'll be able to do this yourself from the admin panel - no dev needed!) @jinghua If the design doesn't accommodate # of posts in the categories, that can be a feature request for a future iteration. We'll be updating this theme bi-monthly as part of our ongoing efforts to better support Mozilla bloggers. So, once I'have @shorlander's answer, I'll lock and load the final plan here and move to get this launched by March 29, 2012. We'll be applying the theme to the UXR blog and redirecting traffic to blog.mozilla.com/ux so that none of the historical content will get lost.
Is this new blog meant to replace http://planet.firefox.com/ux/ ? I also have one suggestion : it would be awesome to have views on the UX from other browsers, to understand what's good and what's bad and what could be interesting to add to Firefox (Most notable example is the "download manager" article by Alex Limi).
@Jinghua and Diane: Just wanted to double-check that we are still okay with moving the content from http://blog.mozilla.com/userresearch/ to the new UX blog, correct? This means that this content will live in the User Research category. Do you need any help with moving stuff? @Chrissie: or will we use the existing User Research Blog as a basis for the new one. Just want to see where we can help with moving content. @Guillaume: Thanks for pointing this out - I remember press picked up mock-ups from that page, whereas we never pushed it. Let me double-check, but I think that relevant content that was published here in the past (such as the native UI mock-ups) should go up on the new UX blog in the future.
(In reply to mcbmoz from comment #9) > @shorlander > > What should the sub-nav item be called "Mozilla Style Guide" or something > else? Maybe "Mozilla Product Style Guide" to be clear for now. > Also, this will launch by March 29, 2012, will you have something by then, > or should we hold off on this item and add at a later date (you'll be able > to do this yourself from the admin panel - no dev needed!) Patryk will have some content to add by March 29. So maybe just the initial page and then we can add sub pages as needed? Thanks! :)
OK, final plan: Blog Name: -Mozilla UX Blog Tagline: (pick one or add one within this character limit) -Dedicated to designing great products that make sense and bring joy Categories -Boot to Gekco -Firefox -Firefox for Mobile -Interaction Design -Gaia -Mozilla Marketplace -Pancake -Persona -Test Pilot -Thunderbird -User Research -Visual Design -Apps Marketplace -Other Projects Sub-navigation to static pages: -Team (static page that lists photo/bios of team members similar to http://blog.mozilla.com/userresearch/who-we-are/) -Mozilla Product Style Guide (if there is no page live for the ux blog relaunch, we'll add this post-launch) -Test Pilot (direct link to https://testpilot.mozillalabs.com/) ----- Next steps: -Jinghua, approve the above -CB to upgrade http://blog.mozilla.com/userresearch to new blog theme with content plan above -CB to file bug for redirect of http://blog.mozilla.com/userresearch to http://blog.mozilla.com/ux -CB to orient Diane L. onto Blogzilla's theme features, etc. -Diane L. to work with CB ongoing on feature requests that will be put onto the Blogzilla theme roadmap -We all indulge in a modest celebration :-)
this looks great to me - let's do it!
Any news on the blog ? It hasn't been launched yet.
(In reply to Guillaume C. [:GE3K0S] from comment #15) > Any news on the blog ? It hasn't been launched yet. Chrissie, who was running this project, is no longer at Mozilla so we've had a few delays in getting everything finalized, but we're hoping to get it back on track as soon as possible. Stay tuned for more info...
We are all set from the UX side- you have our approval - let's make it happen. Thanks!
> Next steps: > -Jinghua, approve the above // I approve. > -CB to upgrade http://blog.mozilla.com/userresearch to new blog theme with content plan above // Need Help! > -CB to file bug for redirect of http://blog.mozilla.com/userresearch to http://blog.mozilla.com/ux // CB mentioned in her email said that she filed the bug to redirect it to blog.mozilla.com/ux. But she didn't give us the bug ID. Any way to find it? > -CB to orient Diane L. onto Blogzilla's theme features, etc. > -Diane L. to work with CB ongoing on feature requests that will be put onto > the Blogzilla theme roadmap //Please point a person to connect with Diane since CB left. > -We all indulge in a modest celebration :-) //The celebration will come after the blog is released!
It seems the Mozilla UX blog is launched somehow: http://blog.mozilla.com/userresearch/ Is this the theme we want to use? The http://blog.mozilla.com/ux URL doesn't work. Any one can help us with the URL?
We definitely need to get the side bar categories and the rest of the page right, please recommend who we should work with and what's the next step?
Hey all. To elaborate on comment #16, there have been a number of changes in the web team in the last couple of weeks and we're still in the process of regrouping. Chris More and I are working on gathering all the current projects so we can prioritize and make sure they're resourced. Don't worry...the blog project will surely be in the top portion of that list once we have it. It's almost done and there are a number of people anxiously waiting. I'll post here again once we have more details...stay tuned.
Hi everyone. I just wanted to clarify a few of the above points so we are all on the same page. As John Slater said, we are on hold with many projects now, but this particular project is nearly complete. Please confirm that the following statements are all true: 1) We are not making a new blog and migrating content from user research to UX. 2) The One Mozilla theme is already applied to the legacy user research blog. 3) The new title and tagline are already in place on the legacy user research blog. 4) New categories will need to be made and posts in the existing legacy user research categories should be migrated to the new categories defined above. 5) Create a sub navigation to static page assets (team, product style guide, test pilot) 6) A bug should be filed to redirect /userresearch to /ux. From the above list, only #4, #5, and #6 need to be completed to consider this project to be 1.0 complete. If we are all on the same page with the above items, I can given an estimate on when these can be completed. Thanks for the patience during this transition period.
Chris 1,2,3,4,5 and 6 are all correct. We'd love to get and estimate on when 4, 5 and 6 will be completed. Let me know if you need any other info from me.
Craigcook: Can you help with #4 & #5 from comment 22?
Any admin can create and modify categories, it doesn't involve any code. If you just want to rename a category you can do so under Posts > Categories. All the posts in that renamed category will remain right where they are, the category just gets a new name. If, instead of renaming, you want to move a collection of posts into an already-made category that already has other posts in it, the easiest way is to bulk edit the posts you want to move. From the "All Posts" listing, select the posts you want to move and choose "Edit" from the bulk actions dropdown. Then just change the category for the entire batch at once. You can delete old, unwanted categories under Posts > Categories. To make a menu, go to Appearance > Menus. Create a new menu (give it whatever name you like) and you can fill it with the links you need, and drag-and-drop them into your preferred order. You can add static pages, blog categories, or custom links (for offsite URLs). Remember to save the menu before you leave the page. Once you've made the menu, you can place it at the top of the page in the "Primary Menu" spot in the Theme Locations box. Or to put it in the sidebar, go to Appearance > Widgets and add an instance of the "Custom Menu" widget to the sidebar, selecting the menu you just created. Voila. While you're at it you'll likely want to remove some of the default widgets currently in the sidebar (especially the Meta widget). Let me know if you hit any snags.
Thanks Craig. Always thorough. Chris- when can we expect #6 to happen?

chris and craig - can we get blog.mozilla.org/userresearch to redirect to blog.mozilla.org/ux ? we want to start promoting our blog internally and externally and don't want to do that until it's officially changed. can this happen in the next week? thanks! diane
(In reply to Diane Loviglio [:diane] from comment #28) > chris and craig - can we get blog.mozilla.org/userresearch to redirect to > blog.mozilla.org/ux ? > > we want to start promoting our blog internally and externally and don't want > to do that until it's officially changed. > > can this happen in the next week? > > thanks! > diane Hi Diane. I filed bug 751054 to have the redirect done by the IT group. Were you able to make the changes that Craig documented in comment 25? Thanks
Hi Chris Yes - i made a few changes, they're weren't too many. We are all good to go from this side. Diane
(In reply to Diane Loviglio [:diane] from comment #30) > Hi Chris > Yes - i made a few changes, they're weren't too many. We are all good to go > from this side. > Diane URL has changed and the IT group is working on the redirect. I will update when the redirect it is in place.
Diane: The redirect is set up and in place. I do have a quick question. All traffic to the old user research blog is redirected to the homepage of the /ux blog. For example, if there is a link to a blog post on the web and the URL is /userresearch/ it will redirect to the homepage of the new /ux blog and not specifically to the URL. How important are preserving the inbound links to those older blog posts? It is technically more difficult to handle this from an IT perspective and I wanted to get in your input on how to proceed with it.
Hi Chris thanks for asking. i'd love to preserve our old URLs - is there something I can do manually - like rename them to have a /ux/then-title-of-post in wordpress somewhere? if not, then should we repost them all again on the UX blog? I guess what I'm saying is , we'd love to keep the old URLs. we could wait a week if it means we'd get to keep them. does that help?
Hi everyone. Redirects are in place and the new url is: http://blog.mozilla.org/ux/ Can we close this bug? Thanks!
thanks to everyone - the blog looks great!
and closing. :)
