This sounds like something from irc. I would say group chat in gmail/chat context.
In the XMPP context, it's "Multi-user chats". I don't think the official gtalk client gives access to XMPP MUCs, but the gtalk servers support them.
Re-phrasing the summary, as I almost resolved this bug as INVALID when reading the old bug summary.
