It would be nice if we could manually add pages to about:newtab.
You can, by using drag and drop.
@Tim there should be a SUMO page on how to do these things.
Hm, I tried that and it loaded the tab instead of adding it, but I just saw that I have to drop it inside the grid.

Yes, dropping outside the grid just loads the link. You have to drop it where you want the link to be pinned :)
I filed 953086 as all this is not obvious to users. All the find is the [x] buttons.
Also I tried the directions above but found them unusable.
I believe you need to make a YouTube video to show how that works.
Grabbing tabs just means the New Tab window is then deselected...
