Mozilla Community Sites Project is doing great. Even though this project is dependent & being handled entirely by a group of volunteers, for last couple of months it has brought tremendous success to help spread Mozilla among the communities worldwide - I'll spare the examples. That being said, it will not be an outrage to infer that both the workload & responsibilities will increase for MCS in future - for new communities are showing interests to contribute & get helped by MCS. But, to deal with that, we don't have anyone dependable (read: having full-time-responsibilities). Even though the volunteers are doing tremendous job managing the project - we can't have any sheer progress (or even build a stable road-map) depending upon spare 1-2hrs of voluntary contributor-ship of 3-4 persons. So, I propose having at least one paid staff taking the responsibilities of MCS in his hand, working full-time for it. Create a new career-opening/vacancy if required. I am opening a bug instead of sending mails to Mozillians/Lists for several reasons; can put them down if asked, although don't think anyone will require.
I was leading MCS for last few months. Although my contribution in March, 2012 is questionable - due to my other duties (which is why I opened this bug). I will be more than delighted to have this task as my full time involvement (over my "other duties"), as I am competent both technically & inter-personally to deal with the project demands. What are the odds? P.S. there's a job posted in the careers page: Web Developer, Front End - http://careers.mozilla.org/en-US/position/oa5XVfwR that deals with quite similar objectives, minus the team management & community building skills.
I just wanted to say that having been involved with MCS these last few months I feel that MCS is a *really* exciting community project that is going somewhere and that Soumya who has been a key part of this early development could be a really great project leader. The project could also benefit from having an IT contractor position of 20 hours a week. I think having a project leader / Community IT contractor is a good place to start growing the MCS project. Best, Paul
Glad that you think that way, Paul. Couldn't agree more. This particular time is the sweet-point of this project's growth & future. If we again make it starve for active contribution, this project might as well die (as it was about to when :gandalf stopped taking active care of it). I wouldn't mind contracting if Mozilla allows me to, for a few months (or long-term) & to get the project out of its nascent-hood.
