User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 5.1; rv:11.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/11.0
Build ID: 20120312181643
Steps to reproduce:
Clicked "Answer" on a crypted message I had received. (and successfully decrypted)
Windows XP SP 3
Actual results:
A copy of the original message -crypted- popped in a "new mail" window. And then the system got completely locked, no way to access task manager, Alt-Tab did nothing... I had to power the system off and restart.
Note : ONE time the system unfroze by itself after about 4 to 5 minutes.
Expected results:
Just like in Tbird 3.1.20 with enigmail 1.2 : original message is almost instantly decrypted and application keeps running smooth.
I downgraded to this configuration.
Oops !
The version of Enigmail that works fine with TBird 3.1.20 is 1.1.2, sorry (a ".1" missing).

If the task manager doesn't show up, it means this is an issue from the OS, not the application.

Does this happens with non encrypted emails too ?
Does it happens every time too ?

[ Does this happens with non encrypted emails too ? ] :
No. "Normal" emails work fine.
[ Does it happens every time too ? ] :
Yes.
One time after a few minutes I finally could reach the task manager and kill Tbird, but yesterday I waited up to 10 minutes and it was really locked.
I must confess I didn't dare give a try on my office PC for fear of waisting a lot of time.
Besides my son told me he had absolutely no problem with his W 7 / TB 11.
I tried the same configuration on another PC, i.e. TB 11 + Enigmail 1.4 on Windows XP and it works fine.
So the problem is with TB 11 + Enigmail 1.4 on THIS particular PC.
Are you still interested in understanding it ?

This might be related to bug 741208 or to Enigmail bug 24751 (https://www.mozdev.org/bugs/show_bug.cgi?id=24751)
Tb should not be able to kill the OS. Only if it triggered some bug in graphics driver that killed the OS then.
Another explanation would be enimail allocating X GB of RAM, so much that you do not have it, and the OS is swapping so heavilly, that the task manager comes up only after 5 minutes.
Can you start the task manager first, keep it on above all windows and then make the operation in TB (replying the encrypted email)? Make sure the task manager shows the column about used memory of each process. If it really freezes, tell us what are the last values of memory used and CPU used.
I have 1.2 Gb RAM, 3.5 Gb swapfile.
TB 11 uses about 120 Mb memory. Processor time usually about 20%, sometimes up to 66%. TB 3 behaves exactly the same way.
When I start replying the new reply windows displays immediately, showing the encrypted original message. And then everything freezes, including the task manager that stayed at 67% CPU use and 120-some Mb memory usage.
Now that you mention it I remember having had some -totally unrelated- trouble with graphic drivers on another PC. I'm going to investigate that way.
Good. I have seen other bugs filed about freezing OS and they all boiled down to some other program misbehaving. Like graphics driver, antivirus, non-standard third party firewall, etc. Try to look around if you use something like that.
You could paste the Graphics section of about:support here.

Description VIA/S3G UniChrome IGP
Vendor's ID 1106
Device ID 7205
Board's RAM Unknown
Board's drivers vtdisp
Driver's date 5-3-2004
WebGL Blocked because of unsolved driver's problems
Windows with graphic acceleration 0. Blocked because of unsolved driver's problems
Sounds like there's something wrong there... I'll look into it and keep you posted.
Thanks !

That does not yet mean much (Thunderbird did not any detect real problems). The text just means that your card and driver is not yet considered enough (or tested) to be viable for the GPU acceleration used in Firefox 4+ (see https://wiki.mozilla.org/Blocklisting/Blocked_Graphics_Drivers). But that is not much useful for Thunderbird, where this is disabled by default (it is not needed).
TB/FF should still work normally even with this card/driver combo. If the driver is really from 2004, you could look for a newer one if it exists.

The problem disappeared with the installation of TB 12...
I think we can close the topic, thanks to everyone.
