Most IRC clients propose a “highlight” view that contains a copy of all messages that are directly addressed to the user (these messages in the “highlight” view are usually a link to the related conversation context). That allows to focus on ones workflow and check the messages at a glance when getting back to the IRC/IM client.

Even Chatzilla supports that, unfortunately thunderbird doesn’t support it (yet?).

I think that’s a must-have when using IRC on a professional basis… like most of us Mozillians do.
