background image repeat-y not working in a extremely long <div> (~30000 px)

I'm trying to replicate facebook timeline on my site. Basically, there are a number of images along the timeline and the height of div grows to around 30000 px.

The css background repeat-y seems to be working in first 27000px when scrolling from the top. However, the background image cannot be shown properly and a white solid background occupies the remaining area.

I'm using Windows XP with Firefox 11.0. I've tested the site on Utilu Mozilla Firefox Collection and it is found that this issue happens since Firefox 8.0
