Replace hardcoded commands within the makefile: 'make', 'mkdir', 'rm', ?-mv-? with common make command variables { $(MAKE), $(MKDIR), $(RM) } so they can be over-ridden.
At a minimum using "make -C" rather than "$(MAKE) -C" will interfere with profiling when an alternate make binary (or pymake) is in use.
