I made the mistake of looking into these Editor XUL documents:
EdColorProps.xul
EdTableProps.xul
pref-editing.xul

All three want to be able to put a color well into a button.
Unfortunately as buttons don't support this an ugly hack has been used instead.

My proposal merely involves adding <children/> tags to all XBL button bindings.
If this is done I will file a separate bug to update the above documents.
Do you want to take this bug then Neil?  This is not a priority for us.
