User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Ubuntu; Linux i686; rv:11.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/11.0
Build ID: 20120310193829

Steps to reproduce:

I customized the toolbar by putting BACK and FORWARD radio buttons

Actual results:

The buttons are gray-out irrespective whether a mail is open or not

Expected results:

I would expect the buttons to be active, at least when a mail is open
The Back and Forward buttons move back and forward in your history of recently viewed messages. When you just start Thunderbird, the list is empty, so the buttons are greyed out.

Maybe you want the Previous and Next buttons instead? They go to the previous and next message from the thread pane...
Can you check the menu under Go | Forward and Back. Are those options greyed out too?

yes, they are
also Next and Previous function in a strange way, the Previous always brings me to the first mail in Inbox, the Next doesn't go to next unread message
wfm on WinXP, TB 12.0.1 with correct behaviour as described in comment 1.
next and previous buttons, too.
next goes to next unread msg,
previous to previous unread, if there is none such, to first msg in msg list. If that's a problem (don't think so), would need new bug.

Can someone double-check on Linux?
Summary: the radio buttons ¨BACK' and "FORWARD" are gray-out → toolbar buttons "BACK" and "FORWARD" are disabled (greyed-out)
Severity: normal → S3

Tristan, does this work for you?

I tested this on Thunderbird 115.6.1 (64-bit) on openSUSE Tumbleweed. For me, the Back, Forward, Previous, and Next buttons behave exactly as described in Comment 1. I didn't see any unexpected behaviour.
